Global PCB Industry Grew 9% in 2007
PCB 007
The printed circuit board market reached $51.5 billion in 2007, up 8.7% year-on-year, according to the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (ZVEI) and the Association of the Circuit Board Industry in Germany (VdL). The associations expect the trend to continue well into this year, driven by strong demand particularly from the industrial electronics sector. China, Japan and Southeast Asia accounted for a combined 73% of global output last year.

The U.S. PCB market, on its part, grew by 3.3% to $6.3 billion. However, this was surpassed by the European market—for the first time—which posted sales of $6.4 billion, up 14.3% year-on-year, and accounting for 12.4% of the global market share.

In Europe, the industrial electronics segment lead overall demand, accounting for 31% in 2007. The electronics segment accounted for 22.5% of demand, while the telecommunications sector, 17%. The industrial electronics segment, including the medical technology sector, grew 12%, while the military electronics application registered about 9%.

Germany accounted for more than 40% of the PCBs manufactured in Europe last year. The 80 PCB makers in the region, with a combined workforce of 9,220, produced about Euro1.04 billion worth of PCBs last year. Market size, meanwhile, was about Euro1.445 billion, up 2.5% annually. The electronics segment accounted for 33.6% of demand, while the industrial electronics sector consumed 29.%.

According to Dr. Wolfgang Bochtler, VdL Chairman, companies should continue to deal flexibly and innovatively to customer requests. He said that proximity to the supply chain is a key factor for the success of these companies in the industry.
