Rugged Subsea Power Converter from Schaefer
Subsea power converter.
Ashland, MA — Schaefer, Inc. has introduced a new power converter which is designed to be used for subsea mineral exploration or other deep sea applications.

This subsea power converter uses industrial grade components to yield a highly efficient, space-saving solution with increased mechanical strength and tropical protection for reliable operation in extreme environments.

Based on the company's proven C3700 power converter, the robust design provides up to 1100W of power with an adjustable, tightly regulated 24VDC output. The company can also engineer units to accept a high voltage input up to 5000VDC, or to supply higher output voltages and/or output power. No minimum load is required for stable operation. The converter is optimized so that seawater can be used as the input return path.

The power converter operates with convection cooling over a wide temperature range of -20 to +75°C. All dissipated heat is efficiently conducted through a single flat aluminum surface that can be mounted to the subsea structure. Over-temperature shutdown with alarms and automatic recovery, is inherent in the design. Additional features and comprehensive protection circuitry includes remote sensing, Power-OK, DC-OK, current limiting, short circuit protection, overvoltage protection and overload protection.
